The Black Women Lawyers’ Association Scholarship Fund (BWLA-SF) endeavors to encourage African-American women in the law through support in their legal education and to promote diversity in the legal profession.
Ms. Agnes B. McGirth was the mother of Ms. Violet M. Clark, BWLA Member and Partner at the law firm of Laner Muchin. Ms. Clark donates $1,000 to the BWLA Scholarship Fund annually in honor of her late mother in order to assist a law student who exemplifies the tenacity and zeal for service and education as her mother. Ms. McGirth received her bachelor’s degree the same year that her daughter, Ms. Clark, graduated from high school.
She is described as kind, caring, compassionate, empathetic and determined. The Agnes B. McGirth Scholarship will be awarded to a student who best exemplifies all of those characteristics while enrolled in law school and raising a family.
PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP: The purpose of the Agnes B. McGirth Scholarship is to meet a portion of the financial need of a law student.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must (1) complete and sign the application, including answering all application questions; (2) attend an ABA accredited law school as a 1L, 2L or 3L evidenced by a Letter of Good Standing from the school’s registrar; and (3) demonstrate a commitment to public service or diversity as evidenced by current leadership or participation in community service or outreach; (4) have unmet financial need; (5) an official transcript.
AWARD: BWLA-SF will award one (1) $1,000 scholarship.
